Connecting Online, Etiquette, and Best Practices

New York Law School uses Blackboard as our Learning Management System. By logging in, to https://nyls.blackboard.com, you’ll find the courses you’ve enrolled in. Within each course, on the left-hand-side, you’ll find a link titled “Zoom”. Click on this link to find your upcoming, scheduled, Online Class.

Consider the following tips when joining an online class:

  • Get your headset ready – Use a headset when possible, a headset with a microphone will significantly improve your online learning experience.
  • Choose a quiet place – In order not to pick up unnecessary background noise during your online class, choose a quiet place to attend the session.
  • Check your connection – While a wired connection is best, if you’re connecting through wifi we do not recommend using public or free wifi. You may experience connectivity or service issues when trying to connect to NYLS resources.
  • Log in with a proper name – Enter your name, not a pseudonym, so that your lecturer can easily identify you and mark your attendance.
  • Mute your microphone when the session starts – Mute your microphone so that others are not distracted by background noise from your location during the session.
  • Turn your camera on and face the camera at eye level – It’s one of the cardinal rules in camerawork: keep the camera eye-level or higher. Avoid having the “double-chin effect” or the computer’s camera looking up your nostrils!
  • Make sure you’re in a well-lit environment – Set up your computer in front of a window or place a lamp behind your laptop, make sure that light is hitting your face straight-on. Having light come from behind you ends up drowning out your image.
  • Be mindful of what’s going on behind you – Think about having a solid wall behind you or turning on the virtual background.
  • Raise your hand virtually when you wish to speak – To ensure an orderly virtual classroom, click the “raise hand” icon to ask a question or request permission to speak.
  • Unmute your microphone only when instructed by your lecturer – You may unmute the microphone to speak after your lecturer acknowledges your request.
